"We have to become courageous Christians and seek out those who are the flesh of Christ. Poverty for us as Christians isn’t a philosophical or cultural or sociological category - no, poverty is a theological category. I would say it is perhaps the first category, because the Son of God humbled himself and became poor to walk along the road with us."
- Pope Francis
It can be really frustrating to pray and pray for something with no discernible results. In his homily today, Fr McGuffie talks about the real purpose of prayer, which is surrender to God’s will and closeness with God.
So if you’re praying and praying and nothing seems to happen, think again. Something is happening! But it’s happening in God’s time, not yours.
all good giving and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change.
He willed to give us birth by the word of truth
that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Please remember in prayer our Jewish sisters and brothers - our elder siblings in the faith - who continue to face anti-Semitism in our country and around the world today, and whose lives and stories have been permanently damaged because of the violence that was done to the Jewish people.
God, make us constantly vigilant so that we can see injustice and eradicate it in our midst. Forgive us for our continuing silence in the face of atrocities. We know we are complicit in injustice when we don’t speak out against it at every level, and we ask for your mercy. Be with those whose lives are torn apart by the very injustice we ignore, especially the Jewish people. Amen.
When looking for teaching on abortion in the bible, we don’t need to look any futher than the pithy Wisdom book, Proverbs. Proverbs 31:8-9 teaches us:
Happy Birthday to the Swiss Guard!
On today’s date in 1506, the personal bodyguards to the Holy Father first arrived at the Vatican from Switzerland.
The Pontifical Swiss Guard is the de facto military of the Holy See, and is responsible for the security of the Apostolic Palace and the safety of the Pope. Recruits are all Catholic, single males of Swiss citizenship who have received basic training with the Swiss military.
